Benefits of Garbage Disposals
- Reduces odors: Instead of having food sitting in your trash developing unwanted odors, garbage disposals break up food waste into small pieces that are then flushed into the sewage system.
- Helps the environment: A garbage disposal helps keep food scraps out of landfills. Less trash in landfills means less trash is decomposing, decreasing the amount of methane released into the atmosphere.
- Prevents clogs in your kitchen drain: When you do not have a garbage disposal, you have to be very careful not to let food particles go down your drain, as they can cause clogs and major plumbing issues. Installing a garbage disposal can save you from needing clogged drain services
How Do I Know if I Need a New Garbage Disposal?
Depending on frequency of use, garbage disposals can last eight years or more. Along with age, there are some warning signs that it may time to for a new garbage disposal. It may be time to replace your garbage disposal if it:
- Runs slowly
- Leaks
- Makes unusual noises or no noise at all
- Won’t run

Choosing the Best Garbage Disposal
When choosing what type of garbage disposal to install, you may want to consider one with high horsepower. Typical garbage disposals come in the one-fifth to one-third horsepower range, while more high-end models provide three-fourths to 1 horsepower.
The higher the horsepower, the better the unit will be able to dispose of food scraps. It will also be able to handle tougher jobs, like meat and bones, due to the added power.
To determine which garbage disposal will be best for your needs, consider the frequency of use and types of food you have often that will be put down the disposal.
Can I Install My Own Garbage Disposal?
While it is possible to install a garbage disposal yourself, we recommend hiring one of our professionals to do the job. Incorrectly connecting a garbage disposal to the power source or plumbing system could end up causing issues and malfunctions later. You can save yourself money on repairs later if your disposal is installed properly the first time.

Garbage Disposal Installation FAQs
How can I keep my new garbage disposal from clogging?
Should I run water with my disposal?
Your garbage disposal should always be run with water — and specifically with cold water, unless you’re trying to clean it, in which case hot water is acceptable. This is to prevent warm, liquified fat from moving into your drains as a mass and then cooling and congealing into a clog or a coating that will accumulate debris until it becomes a clog.
If the fat is cold and solid already, your disposal will have to chop it up properly for it to pass on, minimizing the threat, or it will stay in the disposal where you can clean it out.
How do I reset my new garbage disposal?
If your garbage disposal gives no response whatsoever after you first turn it on, its internal breaker may have tripped and you may need to reset it. To do this, feel along the bottom of the disposal, found under your sink, for a little button you can push up into the body of the machine.
After pressing the button, you should hear a little click noise, and your disposal should activate again. If it doesn’t work or your disposal immediately trips again, you have a more serious issue at hand that will need to be resolved.
