Signs Your Pipes Might Be Frozen
If you notice any of the following signs that your pipes may be frozen, contact us immediately to schedule an inspection. We will determine if your pipes have frozen or if they have burst and make the necessary repairs.
- Your pipes are producing strange sounds – If you hear a bubbling noise whenever you use the toilet or sink, it’s because air isn’t able to escape to the sewer lines. Other sounds to listen for include whistling, clanking or banging sounds. You’ll want to have the pipes inspected right away – increased water pressure could cause the pipes to burst.
- There’s water damage or leaks in your walls – If a frozen pipe has burst, then it could leak water into your walls and ceiling. If you notice wet spots on a ceiling and it’s not a ceiling that’s right below the roof, then there’s a good chance it’s from a broken pipe.
- There are problems with the flow of water – If you turn a faucet on and water either doesn’t come out or it comes out in an uneven, slow stream, then there may be a clog in the pipe (caused by ice) or a break.
- There’s condensation on your pipes – If you notice any condensation or frost built up on the pipes in your home that are exposed, then you should avoid turning on the water. It’s a pretty good sign that your pipes are frozen and turning on the water could result in the pipes bursting if they haven’t already.
- There’s a strange odor – Strange odors usually signify that there’s backup or that one of your pipes is broken.
If your pipes are frozen, then you can still save them by thawing them out. However, because the majority of your plumbing is hidden behind walls and under floors, identifying where the pipes are frozen can be quite challenging – much less reaching your frozen pipes in order to attempt to thaw them out.
